Many of Martin Scorsese’s films take place in the past. He is known for being one of the great director’s of our time. He is well respected in Hollywood and actors love to work with him. Some of his most famous period films include Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, and Shutter Island.

Gangs of New York, which came out in 2002, takes place in the middle of the 19th century. It is centered around Irish immigration and the Federal government’s involvement in the on-going Civil War at the time. This film involves gang violence and riots.

Goodfellas, which came out in 1990, is a gangster crime thriller set in the 1950′s. This is one of Scorcese’s biggest hits and it is still a cult favorite today. The film follows the rise and fall of a famous crime family. It is based on a book titled Wiseguy.

Shutter Island, which was released in 2010, is a psychological thriller set in the 1950′s. It is based around a U.S. federal marshall who is investigating a missing person on an island which contains a mental hospital. The movie has plenty of twists and turns.

Anderson mixes a distinctive whimsical visual style with saturated colors and detailed production design with an affectionate view of the eccentric characters at the heart of his stories. In “Rushmore,” (1998), which brought him to wide public attention, he tells the story of a love struck private school student with deadpan humor and the inspired casting of Bill Murray, as a despairing wealthy businessman, as competitors for a schoolteacher’s attention. This unusual love triangle plays out believably because of Anderson’s ability to capture the human impulses underneath the quirks. He has continued to create fantastical tales with a returning set of favorite actors: Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, and both Owen and Luke Wilson. In films like “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001), “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” (2004) and even the animated “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009), he captures troubled souls at their moment of reconnection to others. Steven Spielberg is one of the legendary directors that have made a huge impact on modern film entertainment. His focus on effects, strong story lines and engaging plots keeps people coming back again and again to see his work.

Movies can take us away, make us laugh even make us cry and the movies that feature big name artists bring in tremendous amounts of money. Studios will support the costs and salaries when a movie stars a popular actor or actress. They know that whatever monies are spent up front will be made many times over due to the artists’ popularity. Some movies can be filmed in just a short time and some have to be put on hold when the actor or actress that is chosen for the lead is currently commited to another project or if they are recovering from an injury or illness.
Movie studios realize that the public wants to be entertained and know that Friday and Saturday are the most popular days to see first run movies. Celebrities will promote their current movie and other projects by attending premiers and may even have a meet and greet to sign photos. Directors, producers and other behind the scenes staff members also participate in these events and enjoy mingling with the stars and everyone who attends.
Making movies is fun, exciting and can be challenging for an actor, but seeing the finished product makes it all worth it.
